Appointments

All appointments with a doctor or a nurse are for one patient only.  The length of the appointment may vary depending on the type of appointment; for instance a blood test appointment will be shorter than a consultation with a doctor.

You may see your own doctor or any other doctor you wish.  In cases of emergency, or if your doctor is absent, you may have to see another doctor.  Our receptionists will always try to accommodate patient requests for appointments but it is not always possible to match demand with actual appointments.

Urgent cases will be seen the same day and we will always see sick children as soon as possible if they are brought to the surgery which may be quicker than waiting for a visits.  If you have any worries about bringing a child out, please telephone and a nurse or a doctor will advise you.

Nurse Triage and On Call Doctor

Tuesday to Friday mornings, we have a trained and highly experienced triage nurse who will ring patients back who feel that their problem will not wait until the next routine appointment.  The nurse will decide on the most appropriate management of the problem.  In many cases she will be able to help over the telephone without the need to come to the surgery.  If appropriate she can arrange for you to come and see her, the on call doctor or another doctor, or for a doctor to ring you back.

We also have an on call doctor each day, who is available to ring patients back or if appropriate to see patients whose problems will not wait until the next routine appointment.  The on call doctor is also able to deal with any emergencies which may arise during the course of day.

Home Visits

You can request a home visit from a doctor if you are not well enough or too infirm to come to the surgery.  Requests can be made by telephoning the surgery before 10.30am if possible.  You will be rung back by the on call doctor who will decide if a visit is appropriate.  This helps with the planning of the visits for that day and avoids any unnecessary delays.

Nurse and Phlebotomy Appointments

When you request an appointment with one our nurses or phlebotomists, you will be asked to give a brief indication of the problem, this is to enable our receptionists to book you with the most appropriate nurse.  This is because individual nurses have different areas of care which they specialise in, for example: cardiovascular disease, childhood immunisations, travel advice, ECGs, and by trying to ensure that the patient is matched to the appropriate nurse, this saves you ‘the patient’ a wasted journey and the nurse a wasted appointment.

Please be aware that all our staff are bound by strict rules of confidentiality.

Blood Test Appointments

Blood test appointments can only be booked for the morning as the blood is collected for transportation to the pathology laboratory each lunchtime.  Please be aware that fasting blood tests are carried out in the first part of the morning because patients have fasted for 12 hours.   Non-fasting blood tests are usually carried out from mid-morning.  If you are unsure if your blood test is fasting or non-fasting, please ask the receptionist who will check for you.
