Travel

Going abroad for a holiday or on business, please contact our practice nurses as soon as you have booked your trip as many foreign countries require vaccinations against certain diseases.

Our practice nurses will be able to advise you on which vaccinations you may need and will design a vaccination programme for you and your family.  The immunity offered by vaccines is never immediate or total as some of these vaccines have to be given over a period of weeks, and it can take several weeks to get full protection.  You will receive a personal drug record which is filled out and signed by the practice nurse.

Many diseases are caught by consuming food or drink which is contaminated with micro-organisms for example Traveller's Diarrhoea, Hepatitis A, Salmonella and Typhoid, and the practice nurse will discuss the health risks of the area you will be visiting.  There are a few tips to help you prevent catching them.

  • Don't drink the water
  • Clean your teeth with bottled water
  • Don't eat salad
  • Eat only fruit you can peel
  • Avoid ice cubes and ice cream unless you are sure they are made from safe water
  • Avoid food which has been re-heated, kept warm or exposed to flies
  • Eating shellfish, even if cooked is particularly hazardous
  • Try not to touch things such as door handles used by lots of people
  • Take a first aid kit
  • Take out comprehensive medical insurance

General travel advice including if it is safe to travel to a give area, plus consular and visa information can be obtained from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Yellow Fever

We are designated to be able to give yellow fever vaccinations and to provide the necessary certificate.  You will need to give us advanced notice if you require this vaccine especially if it is for a group of people.  There is a fee of £60.00 per vaccination and certificate which is payable once the vaccine has been given.  The certificate will not be released until payment has been made.
